The founder of the University of Nigeria believed that there was need to train Nigerians locally, and sufficient in number for the formidable task of information and guiding contemporary and future generations. On the basis of this philosophy, the University had as one of its original curricula a degree offering in communication education.

Its broad objectives include producing graduates who would work for and then manage media institutions throughout the country. To ensure a firm base for such an eventuality, curricula planners produced a programme of studies that not only offered opportunities for training in communication skills but also exposed students to a broad liberal education within the University philosophy of turning out a total man.

Since those early days, the Department, in the light of student industrial and national needs, has refined the communication curriculum to: (a) respond to the peculiar needs of a developing economy, and (b) provide for the aspirations of mass communication students who wish to further their communication education.visit unn.edu.ng
