DIRTS TOP 100 2011

First off we would like to thank our family, we couldn’t have done it without them. And of course God and Jesus for all the long chats and if it wasn’t for our awesomeness, we wouldn’t be able to accept this award tonight. And Old Spice. Definitely a big thanks to Old Spice for helping us Keep it real.

DIRT 100 2011 002

Unsure if you can click this photo and zoom in enough on the text but it basically explains how we are highly acclaimed and a bit about us pissing excellence and our fresh gear and the manly smell that you catch a scent of when opening our packages.

DIRT 100 2011 001

But seriously very honored and stoked to be in the top 100 this year, the Silent guide won over its simplicity and lack of any moving parts.  E13’s LG1 and MRP also took top spots and its a cool feeling to come out of the blue and land a spot with the heavy weights of the guide world.

Go out and get the mag, these guys have a very fair way of judging gear.

Fogelsode S2 #4: Rebirth of the Step-Up

About a month ago we started giving the step-up a major overhaul, beginning with a shopping spree at the local lumber yard.  It’s been quite the process of getting the lip build, painting it, and getting it over there, but it was all worth it to say the least!  It’s been some great times having some wicked seshes with new tricks and good laughs.  Good ‘ol winter!

Ryan’s Stoke you out finale… see if you won some Stoke!

This last installment of Ryan's Stoke you out should just be Vancouver Islands Tourism video. If you ever saw any of our Tourism videos they are full of happy seniors, golf courses, nice dinning room settings with a cliché Orca thrown in to let you know that we have Orca Pods. Screw that it’s beer, guns, quads and bikes ideally with dead salmon in your boat with a Resident Pod of Orcas swimming by angry because you stole lunch. This is what they should be showing the masses.

Watch this video and have a peek at where we live and be sure to click the link for the full story and to see the winners of all the prize packs.

“It's a little known fact that Darren is down with anything that includes being a redneck. Going hunting, fishing, 4x4'n, sledding, riding moto and ATV’s in addition to riding mountain bikes is how he occupies his time. Hanging at his house for the weekend is always a mini vacation because there is never a lack of fun things to do.”

Dunbar cycles reviews the Elka Fork Cartridge

"Elka's new Stage 4 fork cartridges just arrived at the shop and we wasted no time installing them into our personal forks to see what the fuss is all about. We have high hopes for these new units after being very impressed by their rear shock's performance. While it's still early days, you can read our initial impression of the Stage 4 inside. Were they up to the task or did the cartridges spontaneously combust, causing a cataclysmic reaction destroying the entire north shore? "

Straitline’s family in one giant VOD in Whistler!

All my crew in one spot and in today's VOD on Pinkbike. Got to love this, Alan Hepburn, Ryan Berrecloth, Mike Montgomery, Casey Groves, Jack Fogelquist, Gareth Dyer and Camp of Champions friends all in a VOD for Ryans #4 of Stoke you out.   http://www.pinkbike.com/video/171799/

Bammmmm boyyyy!- I just watched Flavor Flav house of love so it’s my new saying.

Mike Montgomery snags some media spots!

I have yet to see a mountain bike magazine that didn't use this shot world wide. Mike snagged a full double page for being the only idiot to ride his hardtail in this years Krankworks.

Most of us wouldn't drop the Monster banner's height on a hardtail, let alone a 60ft step down. Nuts how you have to throw down like this to win these days, mad respect.

Just a cool shot from this years camp at Camp of Champions where Mike is a coach along most Straitline riders.

The issue he is in, not sure how to get it in Canada but give it a whirl.

Dean Tennant training video

I love how much Island content is coming out! Deaner is a local and is our Andrew Mitchells Team mate on the Dunbar Cycles team and Victoria’s First World Cup team, huge high five! And high five for Dean rocking the SL 50 boxxer, it obviously shaves some time off his runs. It’s not the rider who is fast its the stem he chooses… so we claim!

So check out Dean’s training regime and yes it is off season and when you live in Victoria you can ride all year long.

Straitline’s Ryan Berrecloth has installed the 6th installment of “Ryan wants to Stoke You Out!” basically he wants to pass on what it is like to receive a box of gear in the mail from his sponsors. It’s great until you accept a box from me at Straitline!

Who wants to go to Whistler?

This is Mike Montgomery, entering this video contest by Camp of Champions could earn you a spot next to him at Camp.

1 Week at Camp of Champions!

Simple rules… just click this link and watch this video and enter to be cool!

http://www.pinkbike.com/news/ryan-berrecloth-episode-4-place-of-higher-learning-2010.html

This vid is mainly shot at the compound up in Whistler and it opens up with me walking into Ryans frame with my girlfriend staring into the lens scared. I told everyone that day I was going to try a flip into the air bag, but Ryan wouldn’t let me because as you can see me limp by with my bunk leg. Glad I never climbed the ramp with my aircast on, its not all what it cracks up to be when you land, you still take a bit of impact on the legs.

Alan Hepburn and Jack fogel rip it up in this segment along with Mike, check it out.

Rocking Beats / BMX 85/ Eurobike

You were the coolest in my town if you owned a Kuwahara. I owned one so what does that tell ya?

I Guess the pajama party above paved the way for the modern stuff  so I can’t make fun of it too much.  And every year at Eurobike I walk up a bit from our booth and check these guys out. These guys put on a non-pajama party show that is pretty sick and the beats are better.

And this is just the worlds most important must see video, one that I will never tire of finding a reason to post up.

Pastrana’s New Years jump.

Check this out, nothing looks as steep or crazy until your on site or doing it yourself.  Check this POV out from GoPro’s view onboard Pastrana’s car. I remember not being too stoked when I saw it live, it looked smaller than what this video shows. Nuts.

Now this scraps everything I just said. Watch until it hits 40 seconds… you’ll get what I mean.

Ryan Berrencloth is Stokeing you out!

This is a pretty sick concept that Ryan has put together to make you feel what it’s like to be pro and get your gear kits in the mail. Ryan is covering all of his sponsors and handing over the gear packs to the viewer so be sure to keep an eye on all his videos and click this link for info on how it all works.

http://www.pinkbike.com/news/ryan-berrecloth-episode-2--the-island-2010.html

Ryan went for a rip with Straitlines Andrew Mitchell and Alan Hepburn. Jarret more is just a media whore and snuck into this segment plus he owned the house so it would be rude to  edit him and those jeans out!

And be careful being Stoked is cool once in a while but not all the time, it can affect your life and the ones you love so Stoke responsibly

Or you will become this guy…

Andi Wittman made a sick ass video!

I was in Vancouver Airport a few months back when Andi emailed me these crazy heli shots from a shoot he finished up. I was on my way to Germany for Eurobike where Andi was actually hanging out in our booth with a bunch of other hip brands that gather with us every year. It was there when he showed me video footage to back up the shots he just showed me but it was a rough mini teaser to show whats to come.

Today I saw his video complete online at Sicklines and wow, holy shit this video is what makes you want to go out and ride.
http://www.sicklines.com/2010/11/18/video-andi-wittmann-rider-profile/

If you do not click that link and get stoked then I better see your bike up for sale and buy a set of golf clubs.

Mike Montgomery 720 attempts!

No big Deal…

Mike Montgomery's Huge 720 - More Mountain Bike Videos

Mike twisted his ankle after throwing down a solid run in the finals at AT’s Showdown in California this Saturday.  Casey Groves landed 4th with Watts taking the win. We had Jack FogelQuist throwing down as well but he smacked his mellow pretty hard in Practice and decided to play safe and just have fun.

Slow mo 720 inside…

This course was built by riders and it obviously is the preferred way to do it. The Crankworxs course sucks, is dangerous and everyone agrees it needs a change. Watch Mike take second on his Banshee Amp hardtail and you can see the difference in course layouts.

POV ALAN HEPBURN

Camp of Champions recently sent me over Gopro to play around with, So i have been trying to think of new angles to try with different types of riding. Although this angle isn't anything new it was certainly ghetto with a bottle of water and heavy bike lock duct taped to the back of my helmet as a counter weight. This was to help with the weight of the Gopro that was hanging out a meter in front of my head attached to some PVC pipe. Anyway this was the end result which i guess worked out well, gives me some other ideas to play.

Apart from mucking around with things like this lots of digging has been done with all the rain we have been getting. The sun has been really slow in coming out as we creep in to the start of our summer here in Aus. But its coming none the less and that means more beach and riding time :)

Also working on another edit which will be out soon i hope :)

AT’s Showdown practice today!

Casey Groves, Greg Watts and AT  have been slaving by the looks of it, to make the AT showdown become a FMBA tour event. Casey is 8th in the world this season an I applaud this new point system in place like the DH world. Jack Fogelquist and Mike Montgomery are on hand too to throw down, this must become a FMBA tour with the names in attendance showing up just ride and have fun.

Check the full story over at Pinkbike it has lots of pictures for the illiterate peeps out there.

Jacob Gibbins 2010 slideshow

I’ll be honest Jacob was not even on my Radar Until Banshee bikes insisted we take a serious look at Adam Brayton, one of the few who choose to ride platforms on all world cup Races.

He released a photo slideshow of the season check it out.

While we were getting to know Adam we were introduced to Jacob and we started joint sponsoring his world cup course walks hosted by Adam and friends and to describe them in a nutshell would be… full retard. That's a good thing in my books.

Here is a typical course walk example filmed by Jacob, excuse the audio, Adams too loud.

Check out this pumpkin! Suicide cookies too!

Check out this pumpkin that Dennis carved up. http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5826855/   actual pumpkin with actual burger jumbo patty with all the mixings of a Big Mac. Do not ask us why. It had to be done!

McPumpkin

Here is Dennis down at McDonalds receiving the final touches of his combo.

Pumpkin Service

Since this is food related –if big macs are even listed as food, I let my own creative side go last week before the weekend festivities sparked off.

I was a bit humbug this Halloween and laid low but I thought I’d feel better if I brought a few people down with me so I embarked on a suicide cookie binge!

Idea is simple and hella fun, I won’t hold it against you if you want to steal my thunder and try this at home.

First you get a fortune cookie…

Step : This is tricky and it may require some wire and needle nose pliers. Work the wire inside and wiggle the paper message around until it works itself upwards enough to grab it with pliers.

CNC TECH

Step 2: Remove original message and insert your own. This is where your creative artistic side comes out. I like to swap out the positive message for an exact opposite one hence the name Suicide cookies. I was out of red ink but the victim will not even know the difference.

CNC TECH 022

Step 3: This takes some balls but I opted for the President and CEO’s desk as a good home for my pre weekend suicide cookie, your choice may vary. I suggest Fridays so that they laugh it off over the weekend.

Justin Wyper front flip stepdown/ Casey bike check

VOD on Pinkbike today is of Justin on his blackmarket killswitch filming out in Kamloops and Kelowna BC. If anyone reading this is ever coming to BC look at your airport on the map, most likely Vancouver international, and plan a road trip to the Okanogan. It’s not all about Whistler, the valley has 2 lift access hills Silverstar/Vernon and SunPeaks/Kamloops. This video shows only the Kamloops bike park on Rose hill but the terrain is diverse and fast, you’ll be in awe if you go and you can still squeeze in Whistler if you backtrack through Pemberton to Whistler on the back roads.

Casey Groves has discovered Pilsner in this video, by next year he will be either killing it on the bike or that guy hanging in the park with his shades on. Nah he’ll be killing it as usual.

Casey sent us his bike check, it’s pretty super!

Mike Montgomery at Woodwards

Wish I had a RV in black.

Road Trippin with Mike Montgomery from Alpinestars USA on Vimeo.

Mike road his Banshee AMP and our Pedals to a second place win at Krankworks along with Casey Groves taking a epic 3rd on his Transition, look below to see how dumb he is.

p4pb5485269

So to see him with his Banshee MK11 rig seems a bit out of place, almost over kill but this is the steed he built up for The RedBull Rampage last month.

I set him up with 2010 JlO pedals but was out of the signature 24 karat gold pins, more like I was in a rush. Mike was up at Camp of Champions compound in Whistler along with 4 other Straitline riders Jack Fogel, Ryan Berrecloth, Alan Hepburn and Casey Groves. As usual I was late for the ferry off the island and in a rush grabbed a handfull of parts to build the pedals and made Mike and Fogel realize how simple they are to build up. They got a classy grocery store bag full of parts and a chain guide in pieces to build up, I used my leg injury as an excuse, it still works, and avoided all the work.

Then Mike called up just as I was heading to Europe for a show and asked for a 50 mm boxxer for the Rampage, so we hooked him up and check this footage out of him flat spinning his dh bike.

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=158320037520094 it’s on facebook only, sorry peeps.

Pretty sick color scheme, wish I had a Legend in black.

Mikes build goes as follows:

Medium Black Anodized Banshee Legend, Manitou Dorado with Custom Green decals, Cane Creek XXc II headset, Straitline Stem, ODI Handle Bars and Grips, Formula Brakes, XO Rear Shifter, Manitou Rear Shock, Race Face Atlas FR Cranks, Straitline Silent Guide ,Straitline Pedals, XO Rear Derailleur, Atom Lab rims on Industry Nine spokes and hubs with Geax Neuron Tires.

Fogelsode S2 #3: Zip Lines and Dry Trails

I got the chance to go on a local zip line track through the redwoods a few weeks ago, and it ended up being crazy!  It was a really neat experience traveling through the forest with an entirely different aspect.  Iggy, Clay, Bryce, and I rode the local trails quite a bit that week, enjoying the dry conditions.  It’s been dry for so long that there’s a nice thin layer of silt over the hard-pack so you can get nasty with the drifts.  It can definitely get squirrely though, as we all had our close-calls.  We got to bust out the hardtails later for a fun little evening sesh at Mike’s house, which was a good time mixing it up.  Overall it was just another good week riding bikes with the crew!

Enjoy!

Riding on Minnesota’s North Shore…FTW?

Josh from QBP sent me his freeride update from Minnesota USA.  I flew to Bloomington MN for QBP’s show and assumed that the city would be ugly and industrialized, however when you get there it is beautiful and I arrived in February!  The buildings were all nice modern red brick style and everyone was oddly super friendly. Not so much mountainous but tons of hills to explore and that's what Josh has been doing.

QBP’s freeride blog:

Oh, and I do have a photo of Josh that is quite interesting from when we met up in Whistler. Not going to show it here and loose my leverage over the relationship but it can be boughten if anyone out there needs to blackmail Josh.

New Website and Vid!

My buddies and I have been toying with the idea of making a website for a while now, and finally made it happen.  It’s pretty simple, just a blog where our crew can post the latest happenings, pictures, and videos to get anyone who’s interested stoked.  The plan is to make a series of web videos to go with the site, of which we finished the first last week.  I’m really stoked how it turned out, especially the downhill shots as we got to capture the first rain of the season!

Pumptrack Pumping

Alan is Straitline Components Australian Factory rider and to me Steve Erwin has stained the nations image so much that I picture all Aussies as furry critters.

And our little Koala has been digging again… let’s watch as the male presents…!

“I've Spent the last week building and carving in a little pumptrack close to my house. It's running better then i could have hoped with lots of line choices going both ways. Mostly stoked on how fast it can run for how tight some of the rollers are. I suggest to everyone to build a pumptrack if they don't have one, there good fun and can get you somewhat fit. Great for learning bike control and cornering.”

And just because I am addicted to this opening clip with Alan and Jarrett plus it was filmed in our backyard in Victoria, lets watch it again!

Lamest joke on Earth! Maybe the World! Maybe the Planet!

So I just heard this joke told with enthusiasm and it was the most awkward moment of my life.

If a Seagull fly's over the Sea what fly's over the Bay?

Hold one, this will be painful….

                   A Bagel!!!

If you have ever told this joke in earnest, please go into the bush with no food and water and think on what just came out of your mouth.

Now this is funny!

Don’t forget to rush out and spread some Straitline Components love on your next ride!

Oldy but a goody!

Jacob made Adam sit down in a interview and be serious for once in his life. Adam talks out of his ass so this video is tame and we thank him for watching his P’s & Q’s!

This video was on Banshees blog and I just liked it, nothing to do with us but enjoy!

Rampage from the Couch!

That was sick!  Unfortunately Ryan Berrecloth, Mike Montgomery and Mr Groves were squeezed out during qualifications but as much as I selfishly wanted to see them get into the top ten, the show was amazing.  This is old news and I hear RedBull is deleting all content after 2 weeks so enjoy this while you can.

Congrats to Zink the guy has been smacked down more than most but has reclaimed his name by slaying Krankworks and now the Rampage!

And I also found this beauty of a clip titled, Hillclimb Havoc and it is the Rampages uphill cousin!

Behind the scenes of Interbike Las Vegas

The Sicklines crew posted a refreshing video that shows us at home what Interbike is truly like minus the smell of urine in the streets.

We never went this year opting for a extended Eurobike trip. Take a look at their site, it’s worth a peek.

I like the part with Jay from Banshee bikes dragging his stuff, I so do not miss the angry Union guys!

Fogelsode S2 #2: Afternoon Seshes at Post

If there’s one thing that never fails to make me want to ride, it’s school.  Nothing like going through a day of classes, notes, tests, and homework with the urge to ride building as you watch each second tick by on the clock.  Fortunately I’m blessed to have Post Office down the street from my school.  With the crazy hot days we’ve been having this week, everyone’s been waiting until the sun begins to set before heading out to the jumps.  It’s been a good routine:  roll up in the late afternoon, give the jumps a nice watering, sip some iced tea, and start riding as the light turns golden and as it starts to cool down.  The shadows of lips and landings grow longer and longer until the sun has fully made its way past the horizon.  This is the best time to ride as it’s the coolest out and there’s a nice even lighting for a short while before it gets too dark to see.  It’s been good times getting seshes like these in here and there, keeping us all sane after school.

Enjoy!

Casey Groves and his Virginity!

The Pinkbike Crew popped up a touching Casey story where he defends his Virginity

Crankworx Whistler - Ian Hylands Photo

Casey is at the Rampage raking and building as we speak and is pumped on life. He emailed me on FB and told me how awesome he is -

“Yeah that's why I haven't emailed you haha you've been gonzo for a month. I got an invite a week after crankworx. Pretty stoked. I'm running Ti Grey Pedals and a 50mm pinch clamp stem in black. My bike is P.I.M.P.!
Its a Redbull event so they don't have you fill out forms for sponsors listings and stuff. Ridiculous I know!
I have been stepping up to the plate in slopestyle events all year around dude. I'm 8th in the world right now on FMBA and I came podium in every event but Goatstyle, which isn't major.”

Check out his new digs.

Click this link and check out what he has to say about being invited to the Rampage after earning his invite with his Krankworks podium!

Our Excuse for being late and stuff!

Some Straitline stalkers may have noticed a lag in communication this past month or so and the very obvious fact that nothing is new from us as well!  This past few months have been very busy for us and we decided to bite the bullet and acquire two more buildings next door and a few new tech upgrades.

This pretty little robot is made by Fanuc and will be taking over our pedal and stem production working its greasy little ass of for us around the clock 24/7 365 days a year.

The Robot will be mated to our new Japanese machine made by Okuma, Mori Seiki’s main competitor in the high precision cnc market. Not to step away to our loyalties to the Mori Seiki machines but for the price we paid it was a must have. This new robot will work with the Okuma, a machine reputably know for its ability to hold high tolerances but lacking the speed of the Mori Seiki’s. But when you mate this machine with it’s own personal robot you have a production dream team that will now be the most productive machine we own. We are now fabricating a custom automated door and soon the two will get at it making pedals and stems and freeing up production for new things we have in our heads.

In order to keep up with the new dream team, we obviously need to process raw material faster and more efficiently as well. Welcome Our Canadian made HYD-MECH fully automated saw. I wasn’t too impressed with it at first until we wired it up and OMG –oh my god!- it is fast and efficient. No more standing around manning a saw anymore, the Hy-Mech is happiest alone doing what it does best, cutting. It could use some refinements on the coolant catch basins because the wet floor is a hazard but we will survive.

Next up is a Keep Greg out of the fun room cage. I am banned from entering into the death cage but they forgot to put a main gate on it so it is still easy for me to go in with sticky fingers. The mortorbikes are in the shot to make it look cooler because its just our inventory bay.

EUROBIKE 2010 DENNIS 789

In between all the hard work we are always on the look out for fun to balance it out.

So, this Mori Seiki NH4000 is currently our secret weapon as it is still responsible for all of Straitline Components gear and bling. With our new machines in place and the two new warehouses renovated it’s go time. The down side was nothing new for the show season but we got some tricks up our sleeve.

EUROBIKE 2010 DENNIS 015

If CNC gets you off, here is a video of the Mori NH Pallet cell utilizing its own robotic feeder to organize the jobs.

So there you have it, we have been busy in the lab with a pen and a pad, give me one more platinum album plaque, f**k rap you can have it back! That was actually Doctor Dre’s lyrics but I wish I was as smooth as him and have the creativity to tie that in with cnc machines.

Get ready for a ghetto tour #3 of the factory next month-ish when its all dialed in.
